It is very easy to operate ( with only three knobs) and allows you the flexibility needed for just doubling lines to creating experimental sounds. Also read that the mxr with it being analog does not track well(but the demos I Saw it sounded deep and grumbly and great just like the vid above) I realize im going to have to give on one of these points somewhere, can't have the best of both. The MRX M288 Bass Octave Deluxe works with a 9 Volt battery or a Dunlop power adapter. The reviews I've seen of the whammy say that it does sound kind of gimmicky and digital (the bass octave not as bad as the others), which I wouldnt be a fan of. In this video (7:26) the whammy sounds great, im sure he has lots of expensive rack and post signal processing to make it sound good, but it doesn't sound very digital and fake to me. If I did get the whammy I think I would use the bass harmony setting 75% of the time, the demo's of the mxr bod sound great but for just 50 bucks more I could get the whammy and have 10x the tonal possibilities when I Wanted to get spacey.

The other option I like is the MXR BOD, the strong points for it are that it's small (pedal board space is important), analog, and $50 cheaper. Pretty sure he uses a whammy 2, I would end up getting a 5. Trey uses a Whammy for his sounds, and I would love to have one to try and emulate his sound as best as possible. Im a big phish fan, and have always wanted an octave pedal mainly for the bass octave effect.
